I was totally caught by surprise when I saw the new North American exclusive Sailor ProGear Line Friends CONY Fountain Pen ($312). I squealed with delight at how cute it was! I am not familiar with the Line Friends series, but the characters look a lot like Sanrio-esque cute Japanese characters. I grew up as a Hello Kitty kid (quite the opposite to the goth teen I became, right?).

There have been some previous characters like a bear and a duck but oh, the pink CONY bunny! The design of the pen was more interesting as well.  I haven’t bought a new fountain pen for myself in awhile and then in the same week, I found the BENU Skull & Roses Crow and the CONY — the two sides of my Gemini personality, one half cute and the other, a little spooky. I hit Buy It Now and didn’t look back.

Are the current Sailor Pro Gear fountain pens quite expensive? Yes. Should I be supporting this kind of financial excessiveness? No. Did I buy it anyway? Yes.

The pen body is a mix of material colors: the cap is translucent pink with an opaque pink end cap, the body is a milky white with an opaque black end cap. The grip section (shown in a photo below) is a milky pink. The whole pen features silver hardware.

Through the milky barrel, it’s possible to see the color of the converter.

So, of course the converter is pink!

The end cap on the cap feature the smiley face of CONY.

And the best part? The engraved CONY on the nib.

I love the Sailor 14K EF nib and despite efforts to expand my nib options, for everyday journal and daily writing, I always go back to the Sailor 14K EF nib as my go-to. My first ink pick for the pen was Sailor Studio 237 but it was a bit too light with the EF nib. Monteverde Kindness is a much brighter pink than I had wanted to use but is way easier to read.

My conclusions: do I recommend that you drop over $300 for a limited edition Sailor ProGear Slim? Only if you have the cash and want a pink bunny pen. Do I recommend a ProGear Slim in general? Yes. Despite the escalating prices, the Sailor ProGear is still one of the best pens I’ve ever owned and there’s a reason why I have more than one.

When Pen Boutique originally reached out to me, I got a little confused. I thought they were sending the new North American Exclusive Pro Gear 2022 Pen of the Year Soda Pop Blue ($392 for standard, $280 for Slim). At a quick glance, it’s easy to see how I might mix the two up but there are some key differentiators: Soda Pop Blue has full transparent glitter body and gold hardware. The Bora Bora Waters pen features a turquoise blue material with dark, translucent blue end caps and grip section. The hardware is rhodium plated creating a cool waters vibe.

I confess, I much prefer the color combo and sliver hardware of the Bora Bora Waters over the Soda Pop Blue models.

The full size Pro Gear pens feature a beautifully etched 21K nib. I got the H-MF nib which is the “hard medium fine”. As far as I know, Sailor is the only pen manufacturer to offer a medium fine nib as a standard option. Since Japanese nibs are finer than Western nibs, the MF nib is probably the equivalent of a Western F nib.

Most of the Sailor Pro Gear pens I’ve acquired up to this point have been the Slim variety but having the Bora Bora Waters in my hand made me realize there is not really that much difference in the size of the “full size” Pro Gear versus the Slim. The above image shows the Bora Bora flanked n both sides with my rainbow of Slim models.

Of my Pro Gear Slim models, all of them are from Sailor directly except for the citrus green model which is a special Nagasawa Kobe Pen Style so the nib engraving is different. Otherwise, all the Slims feature the same 14K nibs. So, since the size difference between the full-size and slim models is relatively minor, most of the price difference for a full-sized Pro Gear is for the upgraded 21k nib.

For even more perspective on how small the full size Pro Gear is, above is an image of the Bora Bora Waters next to a Lamy AL-Star, Pilot Metropolitan, TWSBI Eco, Platinum 3776 and an Opus 88 Coloro (which is the smallest of Opus 88’s full-sized pens).

Even posted, the Sailor Pro Gear Bora Bora Waters full-size is shorter than most of the other pens shown.

Writing with the Bora Bora Waters, I realized how much I missed writing with my Sailor pens. I particularly like the 21k nib and I know that makes me a nib snob. While the 14k nibs are amazing to write with, they have some noticeable feedback when writing. The 21k nib reduces the feedback somewhat without creating an unpleasantly slippery writing experience and maintains the fine crisp lines of the 14k nib. It’s a fine balance between a nib that writes smoothly but provides necessary feedback and a nib that makes you feel like you’re ice skating.

Since I do have quite a few other Sailor pens at my disposal, I decided this would be a good opportunity to do a little nib width comparison. Of the Sailor pens shown previously, I have almost a full range of nib sizes (just missing a standard M and B and a Zoom).

I find that the difference between my custom ground EF needlepoint and the F nibs are minimal. The MF is a little bit wider but even with my small handwriting, the line is not so wide as to blot out my letter counters (the insides of a’s and e’s, for instance).

The Music nib is considerably wider but when compared with other music nibs, the Sailor music nib is not overly wide.

The Robert Oster Bora Bora Waters Ink (Pen Boutique Exclusive)

Along with the Sailor Pro Gear Bora Bora Waters fountain pen, Pen Boutique also had Robert Oster create a matching ink. If you want someone to make you a water-inspired ink, you want Robert Oster involved. So it was a wise move.

Robert Oster developed an exclusive ink color to coordinate with the pen, aptly named Bora Bora Waters (50ml bottle for $17).  The color is a bright aqua blue with a little sheening around the edges of letters and a whole lot of shading.

When compared with some of Robert Oster’s other aqua blues, Bora Bora Waters has some of the sheening of Blue Water Ice but the lighter shading of Blue River. When compared to other brands, Diamine Turquoise is similar as is Pelikan Edelstein Topaz. Lamy Pacific Blue is a little lighter.

If you have as extensive an ink collection as I do, you may not need another aqua blue but if you’re looking for one of Oster’s epic aquas, this one is a good option.

As for the Bora Bora Waters fountain pen, if you’ve never tried a 21k gold Sailor, this would be a great place to start.

Final little detail is the new logo on the box. It definitely caught my eye so I pulled an old box to show the difference. Do you like the new logo?

On Col-o-ring paper, Kobe Bauhaus Orange is a deep reddish orange with a noticeable sheen.

On old Tomoe River paper, in areas with heavy coverage, the golden-almost-greenish sheen is also apparent. When writing on Tomoe with a fine stub nib, there’s not a lot shading but as with all Sailor inks, the ink is smooth and feels almost creamy when writing.

On classic Rhodia paper, there is less evidence of sheen or shading but the color is clear and the ink keeps a crisp edge.

I think it’s been awhile since I loaded a pen with a classic Sailor ink and had forgotten what great performing inks they are — like writing with melted ice cream.

For ink comparisons, I was most interested to see how similar the Kobe Bauhaus Orange was to the classic Sailor Kin-Mokusei and the Oster Pen Addict Fire on Fire. Kobe Bauhaus Orange has more sheen than Fire on Fire and Bauhaus Orange is more reddish than both of the colors. The Monteverde Topaz was probably the closest in color though the Monteverde does not sheen like the Kobe.

The Vinta Silab from the Vintage Collection has gobs more sheen but it’s also much more red in hue. Montblanc Lucky Orange is quite close in color but does not have the same sheen.

Overall, if I were reaching for a “scare away the grey” orange ink, I would pick the Bauhaus Orange. The lubricated formula makes writing with the ink as pleasurable as the color itself.

I am almost exclusively a modern pen collector. While I do love the look of the Parker Vacumatics and of course I have an Esterbrook from Jessie, the remainder of my collection is modern. I love the modern acrylics and I have quite a few demonstrators. I was discussing with someone recently that I love the look of7 the Aurora 88 Demonstrator, and I do believe Aurora’s are fine quality pens, but that I can’t wrap my head around spending $700-900 on a plastic demonstrator.

So I realize that it is entirely illogical that when I saw the Sailor Sound of Rain series I plunked my money down on a pre-order. When I got the email, I absolutely could not decide which one I wanted. They are each so gorgeous in their own right. If I had enough money, I know I’d just buy all four and not make myself choose.

I selected the Spring Rain. Sound of Rain is offered only in the Pro Gear Slim model, which happens to be my favorite. The barrels are matte finish, and two in the series are translucent while the other two are opaque. All have gold hardware, and a 21k gold bi-color nib. Nibs are only available in MF, which suits me just fine.

I haven’t had a chance to play with the pen too much; it just arrived on Friday. But it writes super smoothly – gotta love those Sailor nibs. Since Spring Rain is a mint green with purple finials I tried for a complementary ink and ended up with J. Herbin’s Violet Pensees. I also think something with a bit of iridescence or sheen would be fun to play on the light on droplets of water theme.

So now I need to vote someone off the island, and zip up my wallet tight. Until the next Sailor special edition that catches my eye?

The pen is really lovely. The translucent olive green body is accented with gold hardware and a 14k gold nib (the 1911 Large features a 21k nib). The pen ships in standard Sailor packaging including the navy blue box with white paper sleeve and ships with two cartridges and a converter.

I’ve gone into more detail about the 1911 pen in past reviews.  That review includes all the weights and measurements and comparisons to some common pens. If you are not familiar with Sailor pens, Unsharpen has a Buying Guide that’s quite handy.

The only other “1911” I own is actually a ProColor with a 21k and it’s also the only other Sailor I own with gold hardware. As you can see, the 1911 and ProColor pens on the far right are all the same size. The 1911 has the ring around the bottom and wider rings around the cap. The six pens to the left are all Sailor Pro Gear Slims and then the last pen on the left is a Pro Gear Sapporo Mini.

The photo above shows the H-MF (14k) and H-F (21k) nibs. I don’t know if the engraving between the nibs is always different. I bought this nib after-market (obviously, Pro Color pens don’t come with 21k nibs!) but I wanted to be able to show that in a photo, its almost impossible to tell a MF from a F nib. I even thought they were both MF until I saw the macro photo.

So, in my writing sample, I even did a comparison with the 21k nib thinking the nibs were the same width. The 21k looks like is writes wider. This could be an optical illusion of the ink being darker or that the ink in the 21k is wetter. Whatever the case, they are still pretty similar overall.

The MF nib in the 1911 regular is quite fine. It’s comparable to most European and American EF nibs for sure. I have a TWSBI with an EF which is much wider than this. The 14k nib of the 1911 regular has a bit more feedback than my comparable 21k MF nib. So, if you can afford to upgrade to a 1911 Large with the 21k nib, I highly recommend it, especially if you prefer really fine nibs.

Pen Boutique recommends matching Sailor Waka- Uguisu ($13.50 for 20ml) with the pen but I matched it with the new Robert Oster Australis Tea ($17 for 50ml). I think they are both pretty comparable. Sailor inks are probably a bit wetter where Robert Oster’s tend to run a little drier. Otherwise, I think the results are pretty similar.

Pen Boutique is also stocking a matching Yak Leather pen sleeve in Olive Green ($15.99)  which coordinates perfectly with the Sailor Kagero Green 1911.

The Kagero Green 1911 is definitely a pen to give me FOMO. Despite the photo above of my Sailor pen collection, green is my favorite color and the shade of green that the Kagero Green embodies is that “right shade”. Do I wish the hardware was silver? Yes. Do I wish there was glitter in the body color? Of course I do, I’m part crow. All that aside, this is a gorgeous pen and if I had the cheddar I’d go for the 1911 Large ($312) with the 21k nib in a hot second.

Rejoice, blue ink lovers! The newest ink from Sailor, named Sailor’s Sailor, is a beautiful deep blue ink made to celebrate the ink blender Osamu Ishimaru and the 15 years he has been hosting Ink Blending events while dressed as a bartender to emphasize the individuality of each ink.

Sailor’s Sailor is packaged beautifully in a thick blue and silver box that is tucked inside a paper sleeve.

Inside the inner box, Sailor has tucked information about the ink, ink blender and other inks in their lineup. I assume. Unfortunately I have not learned to read Japanese yet.

The heavy glass bottle is well protected in dense foam that is cut to barely fit the bottle.

The packaging and the bottle all point to a very special ink inside.

Opening the bottle, the familiar scent of all Sailor inks is present but not overpowering. The ink is a brilliant blue with a hint of red sheen when you look at the bottle threads.

Just a hint of red sheen shows more as a halo on thick letters.

As soon as I opened the ink, I wanted to know how close Sailor’s Sailor was to Parker Penman Sapphire. Penman Sapphire is often held up as the holy grail of blue inks, sought after by many ink enthusiasts but found by few. This is mainly a result of the recall that Parker implemented after issuing Sapphire due to its tendency to damage fountain pens.

Strait Pens’ Poorman’s Sapphire is a recent attempt to replicate Penman Sapphire (and the price is as low as Penman is high!). Sailor’s Sailor is close to these, but not quite as brilliant.

Noodler’s Liberty’s Elysium is a very close match to Sailor’s Sailor although the undertones of the ink are closer to Sailor Sky High or Montblanc BMW blue.

My writing sample shows the extreme color range of this ink – the Wing Sung extra fine nib gives a bright ocean blue on the Tomoe River paper above while the Leonardo fine nib (a very wet nib) shows as a rich dark blue. The ink seemed to fall a touch on the dry side of normal, the dry time was slightly longer than average (20-25 seconds on Tomoe River paper) and the only smearing issue I had was when one of my cats tried to investigate.

Although the photo is not well focused, the above picture shows the shading produced in my dry Wing Sung extra fine nib.

Shading is still present with the wetter Leonardo nib and looks even more dramatic as the dark blue shades to bright ocean blue.

Sailor’s Sailor is on the higher side of price at $39 for 50mL, although comes in much cheaper than many inks that Sailor has released recently. I am glad that this ink was packaged in the larger 50mL size, especially since I plan to use this blue often.

Another Sailor Studio review! With 100 inks in their popular Sailor Studio line, I may never run out of material for reviews. This is absolutely fine with me since I have yet to find a Studio ink that isn’t incredible in one way or another.

Sailor Studio 341 looks like it will be a bright sky blue when looking at the color band on the bottle. Since it is a 300 level ink, the saturation should be on the light side of medium.

However, just opening the bottle shows the difference in color between the bottle label and the ink in the cap. Sailor Studio 341 has much more green involved.

A swab of the ink on a Col-o-Ring card looks a bit closer to the label color, and starts to show the beautiful shading that is present in large swatches. There is no color separation (such as with Sailor Studio 123) and no sheen, just significant shading.

Comparing other inks to Sailor Studio proved a bit difficult, even with a huge number of swatches available for the comparison. Chesterfield Antique Mariner seemed to be the closest when photographed, however, Birmingham Pennsylvania Railroad Boiler Stem looked the closest in person. Certain lights show more green than others making an exact match impossible.

Tomoe River 52gsm paper (this notebook is a refill offered by Musubi) brings out the shading In 341. The shading ranges from a light, dusty teal to a medium to dark teal that also shows a touch of a reddish-brown halo where the ink is applied heavily.

Sailor Studio 341 is a drier Studio ink which may contribute to the shading abilities, but the dryness was never distracting. The ink drys quickly and does not tend to smear – this may be appreciated by lefties who enjoy new colors.

Sailor Studio 341 is a great ink to add a personal flair to your writing even in the office. The color can pass as a faded blue-blackand is legible even at its lightest. As a fan of blue-black inks, I could see using this ink as an everyday ink especially since it is quick-drying.

This review covers Sailor Studio 130 ($18 for 20mL at Dromgoole’s). In the Sailor Studio lineup, the first number indicates the saturation level of the ink. Even though this ink is the lowest saturation level of the group, I had no problem at all reading anything written with it.

At first glance, Sailor Studio 130 looks pure pink and light pink as well.

I was a bit concerned that 130 would be difficult to read since it was such a light pink (visions of Montblanc Ladie’s Pink), but opening the bottle, I found quite a bit of orange in the ink as well. The overall color here seemed to be closer to coral than to pink. A bit of yellow seems to be present as well.

In the swatch, Sailor Studio 130 is absolutely legible and on the bright side! The shading is subtle but definitely present and an orangish-yellow halo on the edges of the heavier ink pools.

I was surprised to find how red Studio 130 is as I compared it to other inks. 130 is close to being a lighter version of Papier Plume Cherry Red (also a delightful ink!). The sheen in Bungubox Lycoris is reminiscent of the yellow halo in Sailor Studio 130.

I decided to skip the usual testing paper of Tomoe River. Instead, I used William Hannah paper for the writing sample. There’s plenty of shading here and the ink is bright enough to be easy to read.

More shading in ordinary writing – print is always better for shading since it allows variations of ink to show in each letter.

And, of course, a big swatch of ink – look at the beautiful shading here! The yellow didn’t show up as much as I had hoped.

So of course, I actually did have to include a swatch on Tomoe River paper. The orange and yellow did not disappoint me here. My ink here seemed to be staring back at me as well… I love the shading here as well. If you are a fan of shading over sheen, you need to check out some of the lower numbered (100, 200, 300 range) Sailor Studio inks.

Ah, purple inks.  If I had to choose only one color of ink to use for the rest of my life, it would be purple.  I love that purple spans from nearly pink or red all the way to dark blurples.  I love how purple inks have experienced a renaissance lately as evidenced by Montblanc’s special edition, Psychedelic Purple and Lamy’s Dark Lilac.  The Pantone color of the year for 2018 was Ultra Violet!  What a great time for purples.

I have found pastel purple inks very difficult to find, however.  Not that they don’t exist, but the exact shade that I crave seems to be hard to find.  Robert Oster has a beautiful variety of purple inks, but nothing quite right.  Sheaffer had a beautiful shade of lavender ink, but it was discontinued in the late 80s or early 90s and the bottles of lavender are coveted by those who can find them.

I was delighted when I found Sailor Studio 150!  This ink is very close to Sheaffer Lavender but is still easily legible in writing.

Studio 150 also has the bonus characteristic of colors that separate slightly, showing unusual shading at times.  The ink also varies in color based on the paper being used.

Sailor Studio is somewhere between Diamine Amazing Amethyst and Toucan Violet (another difficult-to-find ink that has been nearly discontinued) in color but shows the complexity seen in Robert Oster Viola (an ink that can be difficult to read since it is so pale.

Tucan Violet is the ink that I have historically seen as a replacement for Sheaffer Lavender.  Of course, it also has now become quite difficult to find.  It seems I was doomed to be always searching for my perfect lavender until I found 150!
