The Companion pen pouches all ship in sturdy boxes. The largest, 5-pen size includes a pocket notebook that fits into the slot on one side of the case. All cases include elastic loops that have a pull tab that makes it possible to adjust how wide or narrow the loops are to accommodate a wide array of pens.

The zippers are metal and slide smoothly. The leather is smooth but will show scratches but can be rubbed out with your fingers or you can just let it get rough and worn with age.

There are minor feature differences in each design. The 2-Pen Companion has no pockets on one side but there is an elastic loop in the spine area designed to hold one extra ink cartridge but I found that it would also hold my Traveler’s bullet pen that I use for ink testing.

The 3-pen Companion includes a secretary pocket with three business card slots. It also has the loop along the spine for a cartridge.

This close-up image above shows that I was able to put two very slender pens (sometimes the most difficult to keep in a pen case with elastics) as well as a big, chonky BENU Skull & Roses pen and they are all snug and safe.

The largest case is the 5-Pen Companion and, being the largest, its easier to see how imperfections or scratches will show on the leather but its still lovely.

Once again, I made an effort to fill the case with pens that are of widely different widths. It took a few minutes to pull the elastic snug on all the pens so once you have it set up, you will want to remember which slot the skinny pens goes into versus where the wider pens are placed. So, for me, the Pilot Cavalier will always need to be on the outside and the Carolina Pen Co. (pale pink) will need to go closest to the spine. The 5-pen Companion also has the loop along the spine for a cartridge but could be used for a slim pencil or other tool as well.

The 5-pen Companion includes the small Storyboard cahier with dot grid and Endless’s Regalia paper.

The design of these cases are excellent, the materials and the functionality. They are a bit longer than what I need as my pens tend to be on the smallish side but I do think these cases will accommodate most pens in your collection. I think the Platinum Desk Pen was a bit too long for it but that’s on the outside edges of sizes.

The Nautilus pen design features porthole windows around the barrel, just below the cap that allows the user to see the ink piston inside. Ahoy, ink matey!

In the past we’ve reviewed other Nahvalur (formerly Narwhal) designs like the Key West and the Voyage. The design of the Voyage is similar in terms of build and size. The porthole windows being the only distinct visual difference in the two models. The big upsell on the Brilliant Bunny is the 14k nib.

The 14k nib is specially engraved for this limited edition. I love with waves around the edge of the nib. Unfortunately, the only nib size available for this special edition is M but there’s enough tipping material that it could be ground to a finer size, if desired.  We did not want to ink this up so that it would be pristine for the winner but we did “dry test” it to get a feel for the nib. The 14k nib has a bit of spring to it but it is not a flex nib. It will be a very expressive nib, reacting to the amount of pressure the writer applies.

The cap is heaver than I expected but since it can’t be posted it won’t throw the balance of the pen off.

The Narwhal Voyage Shanghai fountain pen ($150 available in Fine, Medium, Broad and Stub nibs) is one of three city themed models release din March of 2022 with a limited edition quantity of 500 of each. The other two models in this release are the New York and New Orleans editions.

The body of the Shanghai is a shimmery, blue-black swirl Diamond Cast resin by McKenzie Pen Works and features a clear ink window. The hardware is silver tone and the nib is a stainless steel. According to various comments on the internet the nib is a standard #6 Bock nib with a narwhal engraved on the nib. Its a screw-in nib so if you plan on swapping it out, the whole unit will have to be replaced, not just the nib.

The pen is described as an oversized piston filler. Having handled it and placed it next to some of my other daily-use pens, I completely agree.

The Narwhal Voyage, has been described as part of the “Nautilus” pen model but I think the Nautilus is distinct with its round “ship’s portal” ink window. The Voyage looks more streamline where the Nautilus looks a little more steampunk.

The Voyage cannot be posted but the weight and size of the pen means most larger hands should be able to use it comfortably. The grip section on the Narwhal Voyage is also wider than the other pens shown above.

Comparison weights:

When compared with other pens, the 33gms weight is definitely on the heavy end. A good deal of the weight is the cap and since the pen cannot be posted when writing, in use, the pen does not feel inordinately heavy nor is it off-balance but it is definitely a bit “too much pen” for me.

The nib is smooth and wet and seems a little wider than what I’d normally consider a Medium. I am not sure if Narwhal is tuning the nibs before shipping out the pens or if I just tested a particularly wet nib.

The Voyage is a large pen with great details and construction so far. I find it too big and too heavy for my little pixie-sized hands but I know that there is a reader out there who would love to take this pen on a voyage. So, we are going to give it away to a lucky reader!
