Pelikan Hub Recap and GIVEAWAY

Last Friday, September 22, Ana and I attended the Pelikan Hub here in Kansas City.

If you’re not familiar with Pelikan Hubs, where have you been? Just kidding. The Pelikan Hubs are held in September and are basically a fun pen party “hosted” by Pelikan. Pelikan sends boxes of goodies out to different cities (each of which has a hubmaster or host) so that on the same Friday evening in September pen lovers worldwide can celebrate their love of fountain pens.

Pelikan Hub Kansas City 2023

And the Kansas City Hub didn’t disappoint. It was organized by our local pen club and hosted in Crown Center outside of Pen Place, our local fountain pen store. There was wine, cheese, a selection of desserts (including an oversized gummy bear in remembrance of the Chicago pen show gummy snake courtesy of our friend Andrew). There was a table where participants could bring items in search of loving homes. And there were prizes for a raffle!

But more than anything there was lots of good pen conversation with other pen people. New faces, old friends, pen friends visiting from out of town (Andrew Coon!), and just a great time.

One of the other fun things is the Endless Pens donated new/old stock of Pelikan Twists from the 1980s – enough that almost everyone took one home. I wondered how it compared to the new Twists so I ordered one and I’ll compare them in next week’s post.

But let’s get to the real reason you’re here: THE GIVEAWAY! One of the fun parts about the Pelikan Hubs is that Pelikan usually gives each registered attendee a bottle of the Pelikan Edelstein ink of the year. For 2023, that’s Rose Quartz. Sometimes they send extra paper or postcards, and sometimes the hubmaster or an affiliated pen shop donate other things for the goodie bags. And we had extra goodie bags so we’ve got one for one lucky reader!

You are entering the giveaway to win:

  • A bottle of the Pelikan Edelstein Rose Quartz
  • A pad of Pelikan Paper
  • A Pelikan Postcard
  • A set of fountain pen notecards

TO ENTER: Leave a comment below and let us know what your favorite Pelikan is! If you don’t have one, which one would you buy if money were no object? Play along and type in something. It makes reading through entries more interesting for me, okay? One entry per person.

If you have never entered a giveaway or commented on the site before, your comment must be manually approved by our highly-trained staff of monkeys before it will appear on the site. Our monkeys are underpaid and under-caffeinated so don’t stress if your comment does not appear right away. Give the monkeys some time.

FINE PRINT: All entries must be submitted by 10pm CST on Thursday, September 28, 2022. All entries must be submitted at wellappointeddesk.com, not Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook, okay? Winner will be announced on Friday. Winner will be selected by random number generator from entries that played by the rules (see above). Please include your actual email address in the comment form so that I can contact you if you win. I will not save email addresses or sell them to anyone — pinky swear. If winner does not respond within 5 days, I will draw a new giveaway winner. Shipping via USPS first class is covered. Additional shipping options or insurance will have to be paid by the winner. We are generous but we’re not made of money. US and APO/AFO only, sorry.

DISCLAIMER: The items included in this giveaway were provided to us free of charge by Pelikan and Pen Place. Please see the About page for more details.

  1. My dad had a Pelikan pen I think he was given when he was a student in the 1950s. I don’t know the name of it or what became of it but I would love to see it again.

  2. I have two Pelikan fountain pens. I’ve had them for years. Both are have EF nibs, and write superbly. One is crimson & the 2nd is transparent blue. Am looking to get the transparent green one someday.
    These are great pens.

  3. I love the Pelikanpen I got in college, a million years ago – purchased in the late 80s or early 90s, it’s an M150.

And wouldn’t bright pink ink look stunning in that black pan?

  4. I’ve never bought a Pelikan pen, but looking at the website, the dark green version of the Pelikano Colour Edition has caught my eye. (closes eyes and repeats “I do not need another fountain pen. I do not need another fountain pen. I do not. . .”)

The Twist looks pretty neat too – as a leftie, I’m pleased to see that they mentioned lefties in the writeup and I’m curious to see how it actually works. (“I do not need. . .”)

  5. I’m so bummed – I was signed up for last year’s Hub but had to cancel because of a conflict; signed up again for this year but we had to go out of town for the weekend so another cancellation 🙁 Fingers crossed for next year! And the Rose Quartz ink is right up my alley. Honestly, I’d love the Classic 205 in Rose Quartz, too!

  6. I wish I would have know there was a Pelikan Hub here in Kansas City! ❤️ Oh well, maybe next time. If money were no object, I would love to purchase a Pelikan
    M800 Souverän in Black-Green.

  7. Currently my favorite Pelikan has to be the new Twist, because that’s the only one I own! I’ve only just turned my attention to Pelikan as an aspirational purchase (I finally achieved my Sailor Pro Gear Slim!) so I’m not sure which I would buy if money were no issue. I’ll be digging deeper into this soon!

  8. I do not yet own a Pelikan pen, but if price was not a consideration, I think I would buy a Radan Green Ray. It reminds me of abalone shell and peacock pearls.

  9. The Pelikan M400 in tortoiseshell brown was always out of reach for me. Yes, I do have small hands. It would be perfect.

  10. Sweet! Looks like ya’ll had a blast. Unfortunately, no Pelikan hub near me, nor do I own any Pelikans. But I do have my eye on a M400 or M600 – one day. Love it’s classic looks, and I hear they write like a dream.

  11. My favorite Pelikan out of the many I have is the Pelikano Junior my wife bought me on our trip in Romania. It’s what kickstarted my fountain pen craze, almost 8 years ago!

  12. Hi Ana! My favorite Pelikan’s are the 120’s I got in 1980! Although I do like my 200, 400, 600 and 800! We used to correspond years ago but somehow got disconnected. Brad at our hub mentioned you. I am hoping to go to the Colorado Pen Show, my first! I am still teaching Calligraphy at the U of U Lifelong Learning program. I am teaching a letterlocking class on line, having fun! Janet

  13. I had a Pelikan M205 in the marble petrol finish, and an M400 in the white & tortoise shell…I really wanted to love them both, but they just didn’t satisfy me when it came to writing, and I ended up trading them in for something else. I still find myself ALMOST buying the M400 again though, although if I did, I’d spend the extra money to have the nib customized to an ACTUAL extra fine.

I do LOVE my bottle of Smoky Quartz though! One of the most delightful brown inks I’ve had the pleasure of writing with.

  14. Thanks for the chance to win! I registered for the Portland hub this year but wasn’t able to attend due to a last minute business trip. I don’t yet have a Pelikan pen, but I recently inked up a pen with a sample of Pelikan Edelstein Apatite that I got from the Portland Pelikan Hub in 2022 and I love it. I wouldn’t be mad if a M1000 Raden Green Ray showed up in the mail.

  15. I have a Pelikan Twist, in that shimmery purple color (reminds me a bit of an oil slick on rainy pavement). And now I’m reminded I need to get more ink for it because it’s dry! But it’s the only Pelikan I’ve tried.

  16. When I first saw the Pelikan M800 Fountain Pen – Green Demonstrator (Special Edition), I was like “Wow!” I’m still like just “Wow!”

  17. I don’t own a Pelikan yet but have had my eye on the Green Marble for years. I’m really just waiting for the chance though to hold one and see how it feels. I’m worried it might be a little small. And I couldn’t make this year’s hub because of my daughter’s birthday. Maybe next year.

  18. I’m new to this hobby and don’t currently own a Pelikan. That said, perusing some available models the Classic M200 looks like a very good selection!

I checked my city and was disappointed there is no Hub event here, maybe next year!

  19. I have a Pelikan M605 in dark blue that was a gift. It’s a great pen. My wish list – an M1000. I mean, why not, right? Enjoying your site and thank you.

  20. Oh gosh, I’ve never owned one but I’ve been eyeing the Pelikan M200! The beautiful frosty body with gold flecks- so pretty!

  21. I’m new to the hobby, so I haven’t tried a Pelikan yet, but the Twist seems inexpensive enough for a try, eventually. Not sure if I’ll love the shape or hate it once it’s in hand, but Shine Mystic has caught my eye. (Have picked up one of inks, though – couldn’t resist that Moonstone!)

  22. Which is my fave Pelikan…
It would have to be my Pelikan 140 in all black… my first Pelikan… bought on eBay for only about AU$110 in mint condition… has a glorious EF nib with the classic vintage Pelikan flex… soooo good… soooo classic and soooo classy

  23. If money was no object I would love a Pelikan M1000 Souverän Raden Red Infinity. Then I would have a custom grind to a cursive italic.

  24. I currently do not own a Pelikan…but after perusing their website I stumbled across The Pyramids of Giza limited edition from 2004. I can only say WOW!

  25. My favorite Pelikan is the M1000 among many Pelikans I have. There is no pen in the market like it. The over-size nib on this pen is amazing and real joy to write with.

  26. I have 2 Pelikan pens my first was the M200 in the Cafe Crème finish and my second is a M805 in the Sea Swirl finish a Christmas gift from my wife.

  27. My favorite Pelikan is my special edition red/wood grain, Medium nib, minor tuning to make it write a little wetter. I LOVES IT.

However, I still lust after one of the Pelikan Toledo pens. Maybe someday…..

  28. My favorite is my only, my Pelikan Pura P40, but next on my list is the Classic M200 in Pastel Blue. I absolutely love any one of them that has the fantastic face on the clip!!
