GIVEAWAY: Saki Roll Pen Case

How do you store your pens? I love trying out new pen cases almost as much as I love buying new pens! While in the past I’ve collected cases from Galen, Rickshaw and the sadly-closed Nock Co., I came across the Saki Pen Rolls ($16+) while on Jetpens a few weeks ago, and wanted to give them a try.

These Japanese-made pen rolls are made with traditional Japanese prints on the outside, and plain black fabric on the inside. They aren’t padded (just a few layers of fabric), and have a sturdy black cotton cord that can wrap around twice to hold them shut. Inside there are three slots for pens. Each slot can hold more than one pen, if you’re comfortable with your pens touching, or you can keep three pens relatively separated within the case. With these cases, what you see is what you get. They’re simple and perfect for dropping a few pens into a purse or bag, or carrying along with your favorite notebook.

The reason I ordered these cases is because a case from Galen or Rickshaw that will accommodate 3-6 pens will set you back more than $16. I do think they have other bonuses (more variety on prints, extra padding, etc.) but if you’re just starting out and looking for a way to carry a few pens, these Saki rolls will serve you well!

I mentioned a giveaway right? We’ll select two winners who will each win one of the Saki Pen Rolls pictured above (Purple and Maccha Green) plus some ink samples and swag. The pen cases are brand new, only used for the photos above!

TO ENTER: Leave a comment below telling me about your favorite pen case! If you don’t have one yet, let me know which color Saki Roll you’d like to win.  (Play along and type in something. It makes reading through entries more interesting for me, okay?) One entry per person.

If you have never entered a giveaway or commented on the site before, your comment must be manually approved by our highly-trained staff of monkeys before it will appear on the site. Our monkeys are underpaid and under-caffeinated so don’t stress if your comment does not appear right away. Give the monkeys some time.

FINE PRINT: All entries must be submitted by 10pm CST on Sunday, January 30, 2022. All entries must be submitted at wellappointeddesk.com, not Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook, okay? Winner will be announced on Monday. ONE winner will be selected by random number generator from entries that played by the rules (see above). Please include your actual email address in the comment form so that I can contact you if you win. I will not save email addresses or sell them to anyone — pinky swear. If winner does not respond within 5 days, I will draw a new giveaway winner. Shipping via USPS first class is covered. Additional shipping options or insurance will have to be paid by the winner. We are generous but we’re not made of money. US and APO/AFO only, sorry.

DISCLAIMER: These cases were provided to us by Jetpens (a lovely sponsor) for the purposes of review and this giveaway!

  1. All my fountain pens are shades of black, green, or blue (or demonstrators filled up with blue ink!) so the green Saki Roll is their ideal match!

    1. I have a case that stands up and zips open to fold over at the top from JetPens so you can see everything. Super cute. Purple, please!

  2. I don’t currently have a pen case so the purple one would be fantastic. It would match the colour of my nose!

  3. My favorite pen case and home for my better pens is the Franklin Christoph penvelope. I don’t have something that I can quickly drop in my backpack tho and these look like they can do the trick. Green would go nicely with my other supplies. Thanks Ana!

  4. I have an antique wooden box that used to hold an old metal speculum. Yeah, I know it’s weird but it still has the label on the inside of the box and it makes me smile evey time I open it. I keep my best pens in there. I love the green Saki best.

  5. Love the purple roll. I usually use an individual case but it would be nice to be able to have 3 pens at a time.

  6. In the past, I have enjoyed the fabric Taccia pen holder. They come in beautiful patterns and vivid colours.

  7. I don’t have a pen case. (Green would be my preference.) I usually tuck my pen between my journal pages with it clipped to several pages. However, my now almost vintage Pelikan pen broke/-the clip came off and with it, the tip of the top of the pen. I’ve substituted a top from a Sailor pen I’m not using and I’ve bought a new fountain pen from a different company. Nice pen, only $50 bucks but it doesn’t have the gold nib my Pelikan pen has. I have one style journal that has a plastic poker on the inside of the back cover and that was handy for pen storage.

  8. I have two of these pen holders already and live in Canada so not eligible for the giveaway, but these are excellent and my favourite pen holders. Highly recommended!

  9. These pen cases are lovely and I covet them both even as I’ve retired and downsized. (I say green if I must choose one.)

  10. My favorite pen case is a Rickshaw in a blue and white abstract print. I was able to pick it up preowned from Virtual Pen Show on Instagram. I use it daily for for my most prized pens.

  11. My CURRENT favourite case turns out to be a little no-name two-pen case that came as a freebie with a pen, I believe. I used to carry all my pens around in a beautiful Giralogio twelve slot case, just so I could open the case, admire, have my choices of pens and inks. Then I sort of outgrew that one and moved to keeping my pens in a display box at home, and now I use the two-pen case. One to write with, and one as a back-up (in case I run out of ink or something wonky happens).

  12. My one and only is a Kokuyo Neocritz. I just started collecting pens. It’s great to throw in my purse and then stand up at my desk at work. It’s a little small though, but it forces me to be choosy about what pens to bring that day.

  13. I love my Superior Labor leather pen/tool roll! But these soft, colorful rolls are ideal for easily carrying a handful of precious pens. The green is my favorite, but I’d appreciate either. Thanks for the giveaway!

  14. One of my goals last year was to buy pen cases to safely store my way too many fountain pens! Tried all the usual offerings from Girologio, Charles Dee Designs, Galen Leather, Kaco and a generic one from Amazon (same material as the Kaco) and all have a flaw or two, even the highly touted Galen Leather which has excellent leather and very well made, but the single band that holds the pen leaves much to be desired. I won’t elaborate on the others, but now I am looking at a very good pen roll to keep my currently inked pens handy, but also safe. So these pens rolls was worth a look! Thanks for the review.

  15. I have a yellow “neoprene” zippered pencil case, I think it is from IKEA, years ago. I keep in my back pack, it is highly functional and easy to find. These however are lovely, both colors.

  16. The Saki Pen Roll in Maccha Green looks dapper. Funny how I haven’t thought much about pen cases. I have only got a generic black PU leather pen sleeve which can hold up to 3 pens.

  17. Well my favorite pen and pencil case right now is my stand up case. But I don’t really have anything to protect and carry my precious fountain pens. So I would love to have one of these! Either color would make me happy! Thanks! Nancy

  18. I have been eyeing these for awhile. I think they are both really lovely and functional. I think I slightly prefer the purple.

  19. I have a single leather Cross pen sleeve that I have had for years and use quite a bit. For pocket sized pens I use the tin my Kaweco AL Sport came in. Other than that I use the pen slots in my backpack. I would love to give the green Saki roll a try!

  20. I’ve been using the black plastic case that came with one of my Pilot pens. With the molded cushion removed, I can fit up to 4 pens inside, depending on their size. I would love something as pretty as the Saki rolls to use in its place. The purple is my favorite as the design reminds me of an embroidered pillow my grandmother made years ago.

  21. One of my favorite pen cases is an eyeglasses case. They come in pretty designs and colors, and with a hard shell safely protect however many pens you want to carry with you. I like both colors in your giveaway, but purple is my favorite for most things!

  22. Do pen slots in bags and bag organizers count as cases? Because that’s typically how I roll. But I’d like to…roll ;)…with that green!

  23. Both these look gorgeous! I have a number of pen cases including a 3-pen case from Rickshaw. I like how you can roll up these cases and have them secured using the cord.

  24. My favorite is a Rickshaw Bagworks pen coozie, but that’s only 3 of more pens than I want to say… A Purple Saki would be awesome to add to it!

  25. My go-to cases have been a couple of Nock Co. Hightowers (in Coffee/Amethyst and Navy Blue/Steel), which I rotate bi-annually. I’d really like to snag one of these options, since a roll up case has long been on my wish list. Thanks for offering such beautiful options!

  26. They both look great. I don’t have a pen holder at this time and always looking.
    Thanks you for the opportunity.

  27. I don’t have a pen case but now that I’ve seen these, I would have to say the green one is my favourite.

  28. I just got a Rickshaw 3 Pen Coozy, and wow, the lining is so plush! I’m trying not to have more than 3 pens inked at a time (not including the pen I keep in my planner’s pen loop), so these 3-pen cases are really speaking to me. While the Saki rolls might lack Rickshaw’s plushness, the shorter slots look like they might be a better fit for my preferred short/pocket pens. I practically stalk JetPens.com, and don’t know how I missed these cases!

  29. I like my Nock Brasstown pen/pencil case the most. It’s rugged, versatile and good looking. I have the black waxed canvas Kickstarter version.

  30. I am at present pen roll deprived. The green one appeals to me most as it reminds me of a forest setting where I can walk and clear my mind of the day’s intrusions.

  31. My favorite pen roll? I don’t have one, but use a cup on my desk. The purple roll would be a most wonderful addition to my existing mania of purple pens and purple inks and …. well, you get the idea 🙂

  32. I’ll have to win that Maccha Green pen roll before I can tell you about my favorite pen case. My current fountain pen holder is a Spider-Man coffee cup sitting on my desk (’cause Spider-Man rocks). And while it looks great sitting there in my home office/study/library, it’s a bit bulky to try and cram into my shirt pocket.

  33. My Nock Sinclair is my favorite (in an very Myke colorway) but I’d love the chance for the purple or or the green pen roll. I adore both colors.

  34. Currently I’m storing my pens in an ordinary pencil case. Getting a nice way to store & transport them is my current goal! I’m making myself hold off on buying any new pens until I invest in a pen roll, haha.

  35. My favorite case is the “Compact Pen Case” from LIHIT LAB. Nice little zip-up case. (Mine’s red.) I’m torn on which color to choose for the give-away… I like the green color a bit more, but prefer the pattern on the purple case. I’d be very pleased to receive either, but if I get to pick first I’d go purple — I guess my love of pattern is a little stronger than my color preference.

  36. My two favorites are: 1. Etchr Field Case which I find handy for trips of more than a week or keeping my most used supplies organized and within reach (and away from my cats) 2. A Lihit Lab case I got on Amazon. It’s my daily carry. Holds a watercolor palette, mech pencil, waterbrush, eraser, a paper towel, a fountain pen and my charger cables.

  37. I treated myself to the Rickshaw Inktopus Hand Roll for Christmas, which is one of my favorite things ever, but I never want to roll it up, because you can’t see the design! It would be lovely to have the green Saki so I could just leave my Inktopus open on my desk 😛

  38. I don’t have any pen rolls. I have a Rickshaw coozy, the design is a Goulet exclusive, and a few single pen sleeves from Rickshaw. I have some things from Nock and Lochby. One of those pen rolls would be a wonderful addition since I have many pens.

  39. My favorite pen case is my backpack, an eBags Pro Slim Laptop Backpack. The pens live in the elastic pocket in the organizer section, and my A5 notebooks for work live in the middle compartment.

If I win, I’d prefer the purple one. Cheers!

  40. I have a Galen Leather case for my vintage pens, but the purple roll would be much more convenient for carrying my daily use pens to/from the office (OK… the bedroom. Thanks COVID!)

  41. I don’t have a pen case. The purple print is very pretty and would be my choice. I don’t mind my few pens touching. My 18 year old daughter still does not like her food touching on her plate. I guess she wouldn’t want her pens to touch.

  42. I like the green. I had a 4 pen case. Some of it was leather but the inside turned out to be something else that wore out

  43. Honestly? I love my Nock Sinclair so much I bought a second one, just because! This seems like it would also have its uses, green would be my choice! Thanks!

  44. At the moment the only case I have for my pens is an extra notions case that I usually use for knitting stuff. I would LOVE to win the green case to better protect my pens!

  45. I like mypen roll from Rickshaw. It can be a bit bulky with six pens, but it fits better than most smaller pen cases while holding more and it covers the pens better than most. So I’ve not found one better.

  46. I enjoy my DELDE standing case. It’s made of a sort of stiff canvas in a cylinder that stands up on its own so you can more easily access the pens when you’re sitting a desk. Then you can zip it up and take it with you.

  47. Purple and green are my two favorite colors, so its hard to choose, but I’d say purple since I love the sashiko pattern <3

  48. Nice cases, I like the patterns! I prefer the purple one, it’s one of my favourite colours.

I have a wooden display box for my pens and, for most of them, a dedicated leather sleeve, usually from the same manufacturer, i.e. a Kaweco one for my Kaweco Sport, Stilform ones for my stilform KOSMOS and Ink, Namisu ones for my Namisu Ixion and N1, etc.

These days I mainly use an Agptek Apple Pencil case, as I usually carry two digital pens for my rM2 (my favourite Lamy AL Star and either a Staedtler Noris classic, either a Noris Jumbo or the rM Marker Plus). I can easily fit two or three pens in there, as well as extra ink cartridges or converters.

P.S.: I know I’m not eligible for the giveaway; these cases are cool, though, so I felt like commenting anyway 🙂

  49. My go-to pen case used to be a Nock Co Brasstown, but now with remote work I keep everything in a little 8-pen Toyooka drawer on my desk.
